Proprioception & Balance Training
Proprioception and balance training exercises are beneficial for elderly patients to help avoid falls and maintain an active lifestyle. Younger patients will see improvements in activities such as sports, dancing, and other athletic endeavors. Exercises for proprioception and balance training often start with the patient working on a wide base of support, and then progressing toward a narrower base of support that offers more of a balance challenge. We work on unilateral stance and reaching positions, reaching movements, and progress to reaching on unstable surfaces, obstacle courses, and incorporating some of the Pilates principles into those treatments for balance. Unstable surfaces, physioballs and foam rollers, BAPS boards, Ab supports, and BOSU balls are some of the equipment that we use to help clients develop their balance and proprioceptive skills.
